Quran Verses:
Lowering the Gaze from Forbidden Things
instructs believers not to look at what Allah has prohibited. Lower your gaze from forbidden things. If by chance your eyes fall upon something impermissible, do not look again or stare. In Sahih Muslim, it is narrated that Hazrat Jarir bin Abdullah Bajali (RA) asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about an accidental glance at something impermissible. The Prophet (PBUH) instructed, "Immediately avert your gaze." Lowering the gaze means refraining from deliberately looking at anything prohibited by Allah. The Prophet (PBUH) told Hazrat Ali (RA), "Do not fix your gaze on something after an accidental glance; the first glance is excused, but the intentional one is not."
The Prophet (PBUH) also advised against sitting by the roadside unnecessarily. When the companions explained that such places were essential for daily affairs, the Prophet (PBUH) said, "Then fulfill the rights of the road." He clarified these rights as:
1. Lowering your gaze.
2. Refraining from causing harm.
3. Responding to greetings.
4. Encouraging good deeds.
5. Forbidding evil.
The Prophet (PBUH) promised, "Guarantee me six things, and I will guarantee you Paradise: Do not lie while speaking, do not betray trusts, do not break promises, lower your gaze, protect your hands from wrongdoing, and safeguard your private parts."
In Sahih Bukhari, the Prophet (PBUH) stated, "Whoever safeguards their tongue and private parts according to Allah's command, I guarantee Paradise for them." Ubaidah said, "Anything leading to disobedience of Allah is a major sin." Since a wandering gaze leads to corruption in the heart, the command to lower the gaze ensures purity and protection from greater sins like fornication.
The Prophet (PBUH) described the gaze as "one of the arrows of Iblis (Satan)." He said, "Avoid fornication and lower your gaze." A hadith in Tabarani mentions, "Lower your gaze, guard your private parts, and speak truthfully, or Allah will transform your faces."
The Prophet (PBUH) further emphasized, "Whoever accidentally sees a woman's beauty and immediately looks away, Allah grants them a spiritual sweetness in their heart." Though the chain of this hadith is weak, it is often cited to encourage virtue.
The Prophet (PBUH) explained, *"Every son of Adam has their share of zina (fornication):
The eyes commit zina by looking.
The tongue commits zina by speaking.
The ears commit zina by listening.
The hands commit zina by touching.
The feet commit zina by walking to sinful places.
The heart commits zina by desiring."
The private parts either confirm these acts as true zina or falsify them (Sahih Bukhari).
Even gazing at young boys was prohibited by the righteous predecessors, and many scholars considered it absolutely forbidden, some deeming it a major sin. The Prophet (PBUH) stated, "Every eye will weep on the Day of Judgment except for the eye that refrains from looking at what Allah has prohibited, the eye that stays awake in the path of Allah, and the eye that sheds tears out of fear of Allah, even if just a small drop."
May Allah protect us from all forms of disobedience and guide us to live righteously.
