Quran Verses on Repentance and Righteous Deeds:

A Guide to Allah’s Mercy

Islamic background with the verse 'ومن تاب وعمل صالحا فانه يتوب الى الله متابا' emphasizing repentance and righteous deeds for Allah's forgiveness.

This verse of the Holy Quran delivers a profound message of reformation in human life and turning towards Allah Almighty. It encourages us to repent from sins and adopt good deeds, highlighting the boundless mercy and forgiveness of Allah Almighty.

Meaning of the verse

Allah Almighty says that whoever repents from his sins and does good deeds, he has truly turned to Allah. This means that repentance is not just a matter of asking for forgiveness with the tongue, but should be a deep intention to abandon sins and a determination to do good deeds.

The Reality of Repentance

Repentance means turning to Allah, changing the course of one's life, and feeling regret for one's mistakes. The Quran and the Hadiths have described numerous virtues of repentance, which clearly show that Allah loves those who repent:

> "Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves"

(Al-Baqarah: 222)

The Importance of Righteous Deeds

This verse gives us a clear message that repentance alone is not enough, but it is also necessary to do good deeds. Good deeds strengthen a believer's repentance and strengthen his faith. Through good deeds, a servant not only atones for his sins but also gains closeness to Allah Almighty. The meaning of good deeds is that a servant should live his life according to the principles of the Quran and Sunnah, perform his duties such as prayer, fasting, zakat and Hajj on time, and treat Allah's servants well and justly.

The scope of good deeds is very wide, which includes taking care of the rights of Allah as well as the rights of his servants. For example, serving parents, caring for orphans, speaking the truth, keeping promises, and supporting the oppressed. The purpose of good deeds is not only individual reform but also social good. When a servant is attracted to good deeds, peace, blessings and Allah's pleasure are added to his life.

Therefore, good deeds not only complete repentance but also spiritually enrich a Muslim's life and guarantee success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to improve our deeds. Ameen.

Turning to Allah: A Practical Example

This verse from the Holy Quran reminds us of the boundless mercy of Allah Almighty, and there are many incidents in Islamic history that confirm this fact. One of the most famous of these is the incident of Hazrat Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who is a great example of repentance and turning to Allah.

The incident of Hazrat Kaab bin Malik (RA)

Hazrat Kaab bin Malik (RA) was among the companions who could not participate in the Battle of Tabuk. It was a great occasion in which participation was considered a manifestation of obedience to Allah and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Hazrat Kaab (RA) did not make any excuses and admitted his shortcomings. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) temporarily severed ties with him and the other two companions to test their repentance.

Even after forty days, when no revelation came, their hearts were filled with sorrow and regret, but they did not despair of Allah’s mercy and continued to repent sincerely.  Finally, fifty days later, this revelation was revealed:

> "And upon the three who remained behind until, when the earth became narrow for them in comparison with what it had been wide, and their souls became narrow for them, and they thought that there was no refuge from Allah except to Him. Then He turned to them so that they might repent. Indeed, Allah is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

(At-Tawbah: 118)

Allah accepted their repentance and admitted them into His mercy. This incident teaches us that no matter how great our mistake, if we turn to Allah with a sincere heart, He forgives us.

Lessons Learned

1. Regret and sincere repentance after a sin brings a servant closer to Allah.
2. One should never despair of Allah’s mercy.
3. Repentance along with good deeds and sincerity are the means of obtaining Allah’s forgiveness.

May Allah grant us the ability to regret our sins and turn to Him. Ameen.
